Nature Morte
The images in Nature Morte represent the portfolio I showed to graduate from UC Berkeley Extension’s Visual Art Certificate Program. A vigorous study of art history, making a cohesive portfolio, and many studio classes, including painting, drawing, photography, design, and software, collectively transformed me as an artist.
My fine art photographs in this series display the abundance and bright colors of the still-life images I created using fresh local produce bought directly from the farmers who grew them. Strong shapes and vivid images, enhanced by lighting, give the viewer a sense of taste. In my photographs of produce, I hope to inspire people to choose locally-grown fruits and vegetables.
To create the photographs in Nature Morte, I regularly visited farmer’s markets in the Bay Area to buy produce from local farmers. The fruits and vegetables chosen are fully ripe and fresh, often harvested within hours of the sale. Unlike grocery store varieties, this produce has a home-grown appearance, making it sculptural.
The offerings of a farmers’ market change each week and month as the seasons ebb and flow. The photos represent many moments in time during one abundant season’s passage.
